RoSPA Occupational Advanced Driving Test
RoADTest : RoSPA Occupational Advanced Driving Test

What is the ROADTest?

The ROADTestThe RoADTest programme is broken down into individual training modules, which are delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with advanced driving qualifications and has completed an appropriate training course to deliver and in some cases test drivers in this qualification. The programme culminates with a hazard perception assessment and a multiple choice theory and practical driving test.

Four grades are available as follows:

  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Bronze
  • Fail

The grades reflect the current RoSPA Advanced Driving Test standard for practical driving with the added challenge of the theory test and hazard perception assessment. To achieve a final graded pass, all drivers must complete and pass the hazard perception assessment, theory and practical driving test. Successful drivers will receive a certificate valid for three years and if so required, drivers can apply to have their qualification upgraded to BTEC accredited by applying to Edexcel.

The duration of the programme is flexible depending upon the existing standard of driving and any previous advanced driver training. A simple Training Solution Guide Matrix can be used to determine how much training an individual is likely to need.

To achieve a pass, drivers must apply themselves to the task and be prepared to practice and study in their own time. Those drivers who anticipated just turning up and passing, will undoubtedly fail.

The modular programme is designed in such a way for drivers to develop their skills in a logical sequence and the trainers are trained to support the drivers and give guidance on where to focus the training. This would include such areas as driving and Highway Code knowledge or driving technique.

The flexibility in the programme is controlled by the driver achieving a competent standard in each module. Through continuous assessment the trainer will monitor progress and give an indication as to how much additional training time is required.

Typically a driver could expect to receive three days of training on a 2:1 basis with the third day involving the hazard perception assessment, theory and practical tests. The added flexibility also enables the programme to be spread over any period of time up to three years from their first training day. This will allow time for the driver to consolidate and practice between sessions and to fit in with occupational requirements or an employers training schedule. Ideally we would suggest a two to four week interval between training days, although this can be condensed to shorter intervals, however for an effective habit changing programme, time is an essential ingredient.

Every assistance is given to the driver and training material is provided through RoSPA handouts, which can be downloaded from the web and it is strongly advised that the Highway Code is reviewed as all theory test questions are based on information contained in the handouts and Highway Code. In addition to this, consideration should be given to reading either Roadcraft or Fleetcraft books. Both publications are printed by The Stationery Office ISBN 0113408587 & 0115522913 respectively and are excellent publications supporting the practical training elements.
