RoSPA Occupational Advanced Driving Test
RoADTest : RoSPA Occupational Advanced Driving Test

The ROADTest

The flexibility of the programme means that training can be spread over a three-year period. This provides time for the The ROADTestdriver to consolidate and practice between sessions and means that training can fit around work requirements or an employer’s training schedule. Ideally, we suggest a two to four week interval between training days as this allows behavioural change to become embedded. To achieve a pass, drivers must apply themselves to the task and be prepared to practice and study in their own time. RoSPA’s suite of up-to-date and topical fact sheets contain useful guidance on key occupational road risk issues and are essential revision aids. In addition, it is strongly advised that delegates review their knowledge of the Highway Code and study Roadcraft or Fleetcraft publications.

Those drivers who anticipate just turning up and passing will undoubtedly fail. The training programme culminates with an on-road hazard perception assessment, a multiple choice theory test and practical driving test. Four grades are available, from Gold, which recognises a truly tremendous achievement of which the recipient should be justifiably proud, to ‘un-graded’, which signifies that more work is required. Successful drivers will receive a certificate valid for three years and if so required, drivers can apply to have their qualification upgraded to BTEC accredited by applying to Edexcel. Permit to drive On completion drivers also receive a “Passport to Drive” which acknowledges that drivers have successfully complete the RoSPA occupational Advanced Driving Test. This Passport can be then used throughout other organisations (where stated) as proof for competent driving.

ROADTest offers organisations the financial, duty of care and health and safety benefits from a safer and more efficient fleet.
This results in:

  • Reduced accident and incident claims and repair costs
  • Lower insurance premiums
  • Less time lost to maintenance and repair of vehicles
  • Increased productivity through more reliable vehicle scheduling
  • Savings from reduced wear and tear to vehicles and improved fuel consumption
  • Better trained and motivated staff and an improved company image from drivers
  • Greater care and courtesy
  • Reduced risk of litigation

Why take the ROADTest?

The ROADTest consists of a flexible modular training programme, which culminates in the test itself. The entire scheme is designed specifically to address the needs of occupational drivers, who by definition are more likely to drive: thousands of business miles a year at peak times, primarily during weekdays when roads are most congested to new locations, which necessitate navigation skills to meet a deadline while under pressure to respond to work related phone calls in unfamiliar vehicles while dividing their attention between the task in hand and the forthcoming meeting or delivery.

The ROADTest is the first training programme to culminate in a recognised qualification that acknowledges the reality of driving for work purposes. In order to pass, drivers must demonstrate their knowledge of key occupational road risk issues,
such as:

The RoSPA Occupational Advanced Driving Test (ROADTest) is the only test designed specifically to meet the unique needs of business drivers. Developed jointly by RoSPA and DriveTech (UK) Limited, ROADTest sets the benchmark standard for ‘at work’ driving. The programme is flexible and the exact duration of training depends upon the existing standard of driving and any previous driver training experience. Typically a driver could expect to receive three days of training on a 2:1 basis, with the third day involving a hazard perception assessment, theory and practical tests.
