NORTHERN IRELAND BID TO CUT FALLS AMONG OLDER PEOPLE

As Northern Ireland’s Home Accident Prevention Week began today, RoSPA launched a campaign to reduce the number of older people in the province taken to hospital because of falls.

In Northern Ireland each year more than 1,250 people over 65 years-old are admitted to hospital because of accidental falls at home – an average of 24 a week.

Janice Bisp, RoSPA Home Safety Manager, said: “That figure is far too high, particularly as many of these falls could be prevented by taking a few simple measures.

“Injuries from falls at home can be extremely serious especially from a height, but they are very easily prevented. We want people to use Home Accident Prevention Week which begins on April 24 as a way of focussing minds on this problem.”

Tips to help reduce risks include:

· Good Lighting – Good lighting is vital, especially on the stairs. Always switch the light on if you get up at night.

· Fit a second handrail – Use it as something steady to hold on to.

· Medication – If you are taking four or more medicines there is a greater risk of having a fall because some drugs can be responsible for causing dizziness. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor if you believe your medication is causing or may cause you problems.

· Eyesight Checks – Have eyes tested annually. Eye tests are free to the over 60s.

· Feet - Foot pain and other foot problems contribute to an increased risk of falling. Wear flat shoes or shoes with thin soles or a built-in heel to stay safe on your feet.

· Exercise – Taking exercise improves balance and reduces the likelihood of falling. Use your stairs, go for walks and try tai chi exercises whether in your own living room or as part of a group.

The week is organised by RoSPA and Home Accident Prevention Northern Ireland. HAP groups will be carrying out various activities across Northern Ireland throughout the week. For details of local groups, ring 02890 501160 or contact numbers can be found at www.rospa.com/ni/hap/
