SAFETY HONOURS FOR 500 CONSTRUCTION FIRMS

Nearly 500 construction businesses and organisations were presented with RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards this week – proving it is possible to manage risks successfully in one of the UK’s most dangerous industries.

The record entry in the construction class demonstrated the advances being made to protect workers and to prevent accidents.

The awards are sponsored by Global building solutions company CEMEX, which recently acquired RMC Group*.

The main body of awards – gold, silver, bronze and merit – are for achievement over a set numbers of years. One year for merit, rising to four for gold. Substantial achievement over a longer period can result in Gold Medal, President’s and Order of Distinction awards. This year construction firms won four Orders of Distinction, 27 President’s Awards, 79 Gold Medals, 238 Gold Awards, 68 Silver, 41 Bronze and 33 Merit.

The Construction Industry Sector winners were Morrison Utility Services, Arlesey, Bedfordshire.

The Engineering Construction Sector winners were EMCOR Rail Ltd, London. Commended were Shepley Engineers Ltd, Whitehaven, Cumbria.

Marshalls, Brookfoot Works, Halifax, West Yorkshire, were commended in the Manufacturing Industry Sector.

Roger Bibbings, RoSPA Occupational Safety Adviser said: “I am delighted to see another big increase in the number of construction businesses winning awards. The scheme aims to raise the profile of excellent health and safety practice and examines whether an employer has all the elements of a good health and safety management system in place as well as a good accident record.

“Construction is a hazardous business, but these winners provide positive shining examples of the benefits of managing safely well. We hope even more companies will try to emulate them.”

The awards were presented at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole, NEC, on Wednesday and Thursday (May 18 and 19) and ran alongside RoSPA’s Occupational Safety and Health at Work Congress, sponsored by EDF Energy. Some of the awards will be presented at RoSPA Scotland in September.
