RoSPA’s NEW ROAD SAFETY RESOURCE TO HELP TEACHERS
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has launched a new road safety education resource to help teachers of 14-16 year-olds. It mainly tackles issues surrounding driving and has been created to help students understand how to assess risk and consider the consequences of their actions.
Although students of this age group are not legally able to drive, they are beginning to think about driving or riding mopeds.
Topics deal with passenger safety, drink, drugs and driving, learning to drive or ride and how the media is used to portray road safety messages in both good and bad ways.
Road Safety in Citizenship: A Key Stage 4 is available in CD ROM format and is accompanied by teachers’ notes and four student sheets.
To help teachers, it also includes discussion points and guidance for formal debates, as well as useful websites, suggested activities and information about the law for students.
Teachers throughout Great Britain will be able to obtain a copy of the resource through their local education authority’s road safety department. Copies are also available from www.rospa.com/roadsafety/citizenship/index.htm.
Kevin Clinton, RoSPA Head of Road Safety, said: “Hopefully the information in the resource will help students of this age group to think about their actions and the potential consequences. Road safety is an important issue at this stage because students are becoming more independent and peer group pressure can affect the decisions they make.
“This education resource is needed, as research shows that over 50 per cent of 15-year-olds killed or seriously injured in cars are being driven by drivers under the age of 21. We know that 14-16 year-olds are beginning to think about driving and may already have friends who are able to drive, which is why this teaching resource is essential.
“But if we can instil safety messages at this point in their life then we have a better chance of them becoming responsible motorists when they are legally able to drive.”
