TOP TIPS TO PREVENT FIRES
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents today issued its Top Ten Tips to avoid fires in the event of a fire-fighters strike:
- Put all matches and lighters out of the reach of children
- Put a fireguard in front of fires and heaters
- If you smoke, make sure you have a deep ashtray and that cigarettes are properly extinguished
- Don’t smoke in bed
- Don’t leave cooking unattended
- Never fill a chip pan more than one third full of fat
- Keep bonfires well away from fences and hedges
- Make sure candles are stable and don’t leave them unattended
- Check around the house for fire hazards before going to bed
- Fit smoke alarms, check they are working and test them regularly
Sarah Colles, RoSPA Head of Home Safety, said: ”People should follow these tips whether or not the strike goes ahead. In 2000, 447 people in the UK died in fires in their homes and 14,400 were injured. Injuries from fires can be some of the most serious suffered at home. We must do all we can to stop fires from starting in the first place.”
