NEW AWARD TO CELEBRATE FLEET SAFETY
Companies and organisations that take pride in the safety performance of their drivers are being urged to apply for a new award.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Award for Managing Occupational Road Risk covers fleets of all types, including company cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles.
RoSPA is hoping it will attract a large entry, as fleet safety is now firmly on the political agenda and is something which employers will no longer be able to ignore.
Kevin Birch, RoSPA Head of Road and Fleet Solutions, said: “Companies and organisations that qualify for a RoSPA MORR Award will be able to show that they take this issue seriously.
“Between 800 and 1,000 deaths on Britain’s roads each year are thought to be linked to people driving for work. That demonstrates the importance of companies doing all they can to reduce the risks faced by their own employees when they are out on the road. It is also essential they consider the risks their employees pose to other road users.”
Entrants will be asked to provide evidence of: a road risk management policy, staff organisation, standard setting, monitoring and measuring performance (including accident records) and review and audit procedures.
They will need to demonstrate a consistently good or continuously improving road risk management performance over a given period.
Awards are available at gold, silver, bronze and merit levels, and will be presented at RoSPA’s Occupational Health and Safety Awards ceremony at the NEC, Birmingham, in May.
Kevin Birch said: “RoSPA has proved that one of the best ways to raise health and safety standards is to encourage and reward those who head the field and lead by example.
“We believe there are many shining examples of fleet safety management which may have gone unrecognised in the past. By promoting their achievements, we hope they will encourage others to strive for a RoSPA award, and in doing so they will make our roads safer.”
The closing date for entries is March 11, 2002.
