DSA BACKS RoSPA ADVANCED MOTORCYCLE TEST

RoSPA’s advanced motorcycle test has been given the Driving Standards Agency’s seal of approval.

It has become the only advanced test for riders to be officially approved and monitored by the DSA.

It is hoped this new benchmark for advanced riding can play a significant part in improving safety on Britain’s roads - where a motorcyclist is 40 times more at risk of being killed or seriously injured than a car driver.

Bob Smalley, RoSPA Chief Driving Examiner, said: "Taking an advanced test is something that every rider should consider, as those who pass are known to be much less accident prone. Advanced riding reduces the likelihood of having a crash by around 20 per cent.

"The DSA endorsement means that applicants can be confident they have at least reached the minimum industry agreed standard for advanced riding.

"Far too many of us take the basic test and believe we know it all. In today’s driving environment, we have to continue to improve our skills. Motorcyclists are vulnerable road users. Persuading more of them to take an advanced test will help in achieving the Government’s target of reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 40 per cent in the next 10 years."

As well as making a rider safer, other benefits of advanced riding can include:

  • Lower insurance premiums
  • Reduced levels of stress
  • Improved fuel consumption
  • Less wear and tear on your bike

RoSPA’s test is the only one to offer a grading system - with passes at bronze, silver and gold level - and provides a detailed written report on every aspect of the candidate’s riding. To maintain the standard, riders are asked to retake the RoSPA test every three years. The RoSPA Advanced Drivers’ Association consists of groups of volunteers around the country who help prepare people for their advanced test.
