CALL TO INTERNATIONAL ROAD SAFETY EXPERTS
Road accidents are a worldwide problem with people killed and injured in avoidable accidents in every country. Now, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is to hold an international conference to discuss global road safety and to seek new ideas which can be adopted in the UK.
Expert speakers from around the world are being sought to give presentations at RoSPA’s 65th Road Safety Congress in Plymouth on March 6-8 2000, under the title ‘Around the World in 2½ Days: Lessons for the UK?’
Kevin Clinton, RoSPA Road Safety Project Manager, said: "Many of the causes of accidents are the same in all countries; poor driving, speed, drinking and driving, the vulnerability of pedestrians, pedal cyclists and motor cyclists, inadequate highway design and so on.
"Naturally there are significant social and cultural differences between countries. Approaches to preventing road accidents and casualties vary, with many countries developing expertise and best practice in particular areas of road safety.
"The aim of our congress, sponsored by Britax, will be to highlight international best practice in a wide range of road safety fields. We will seek to draw lessons which the UK can learn, and in particular to identify measures which could be adapted to support the UK’s forthcoming National Road Safety Strategy and Targets."
Presentations which illustrate innovative road safety schemes in other countries are being sought on the following (or any other relevant) topics:
- Global road accident casualty figures and trends.
- Road safety education and training initiatives.
- Innovative highway schemes and policies.
- The role of the police in road safety.
- Regulating road use and road users.
- Driver behaviour and psychology.
- In-Car safety.
- Schemes for vulnerable road users.
